Repair or replace

Can my tyre be repaired?

It comes down to where the damage is and how big it is. The generally accepted rule: a puncture can be repaired when it's in the tread and no more than 6 mm across.

Usually repairable when

  • The puncture is in the tread — the part of the tyre that meets the road
  • The hole is no more than 6 mm across
  • The tyre hasn't been driven on while flat

Needs a new tyre when

  • The damage is in the sidewall or shoulder — those parts flex with every turn of the wheel, so a repair there is generally not safe
  • The hole is bigger than 6 mm
  • There's a bulge, or cords are showing through the rubber
  • It's been driven on flat, leaving pinches or tears inside
  • The tread is below the legal minimum — 1.5 mm in NSW

We take the tyre off the rim before repairing it, so the damage is checked from the inside. If it can't be repaired safely, we'll tell you straight — and quote a replacement from our new tyres or used tyres.

How we do it

Repaired from the inside — the repair that lasts

A string plug pushed in from the outside only seals the surface and leaves the tyre's inner lining exposed — a temporary fix, not a permanent repair. Our full repair goes like this:

  1. 1

    Off the rim

We take the tyre off the wheel, so the puncture is checked from the inside — not guessed at from the outside.

  2. 2

    Repaired from the inside

A combination patch-plug fills the hole and seals the inner lining, in line with the Australian Standard for tyre repair (AS 1973).

  3. 3

    Rebalanced and refitted

The wheel is rebalanced before it goes back on your car.

In a hurry? A quick plug, from $20 per repair

We also plug a puncture from the outside when you need to get going. It's a temporary fix — have the tyre repaired properly from the inside soon after.

Got a flat right now?

  • Get off the road safely — and drive no further than you need to. Driving on a flat can tear the tyre up inside and turn a repairable puncture into a new tyre.
  • Fit the spare. A space-saver has limits, such as a top speed of 80 km/h, and is only meant to get you home or to a tyre shop.
  • Used a sealant kit instead? It's only a temporary fix — get the tyre looked at as soon as you can.

Good to know

Punctures, straight answers

How much does a puncture repair cost?

From $40 per repair, and rebalancing the wheel is included. A quick plug from the outside — a temporary fix — is from $20 per repair. What we quote is what you pay.

How long does a puncture repair take?

About 20 minutes, rebalancing included.

Can every puncture be repaired?

No. The generally accepted rule is that a puncture can be repaired when it's in the tread and no more than 6 mm across. Damage in the sidewall or shoulder, a bigger hole, a bulge, or damage from driving on the tyre while it was flat means a new tyre. We take the tyre off the rim first, so we see the damage from the inside, and tell you straight.

Is a plug from the outside a proper repair?

Not a permanent one. A string plug pushed in from the outside only seals the surface and leaves the tyre's inner lining exposed. We do a quick plug (from $20 per repair) when you need to get going — treat it as temporary, and have the tyre repaired properly from the inside soon after. Our full repair uses a combination patch-plug, which fills the hole and seals the inner lining as well.

Can I drive to you on a flat tyre?

Only as far as you need to get off the road safely. Driving on a flat can cause pinches and tears inside the tyre and turn a repairable puncture into a new tyre. Fit the spare and bring the punctured wheel to us.

What if my tyre can't be repaired?

We'll tell you straight and quote you a replacement. We sell new tyres and inspected used tyres, and fitting and balancing are included when you buy them from us.
